Hertha Berlin suffered a solid loss at the Olympic Stadium on Friday night. Rune Almenning Jarstein and co. took on Eintracht Frankfurt in the first home game of the season, and in the end it was 1-3 on the board.
For the second time in a row this season, Hertha started with the new acquisition Alexander Schwolow in goal. The 28-year-old comes from Freiburg and has knocked out Jarstein as first goalkeeper.
Schwolow could not be blamed for any of the scores. The first came by André Silva on a penalty kick after 30 minutes. Goal number two was a cash header by Bas Dost six minutes later. Sebastian Rode turned the ball nicely into 3-0 after 71 minutes.
Martin Hinteregger reduced to 1-3 for Hertha Berlin, which was also the end result.
Hertha goalkeeper Schwolow was after the ball on all three goals, but probably wished he was 50 centimeters taller.
Jarstein saw it all from the bench. He has not played a Bundesliga match since June 20 – against Bayer Leverkusen.
Storavisa Bild writes that Schwolow has been informed that he is the first goalkeeper in Hertha Berlin this season. He came from Freiburg for five million euros, or 55 million kroner.
This is bad news for Jarstein, who has been first goalkeeper and undisputed number one at the Olympic Stadium in recent years.
He is also the first goalkeeper on the national team, and played good matches against Austria and Northern Ireland earlier this month.
The relegation is bad news for coach Lars Lagerbäck, who is dependent on having players in shape when Serbia visits the European Championship playoffs on October 8.
It also does not help that second goalkeeper Ørjan Håskjold Nyland is out in the cold in Aston Villa.
Of the good news from Berlin on Friday night, is that 4000 spectators were present at the match. The Bundesliga has allowed up to 20 percent of the capacity of the stadiums to be filled.
Eintracht Frankfurt topped the table with the victory.
