Bundesliga »News» Riegler best penalty killer in Bundesliga history

No player has saved as many Bundesliga penalties as Christoph Riegler. Lucas Venuto, Dieter Elsneg, Joelinton, Smail Prevljak, Alexander Grünwald, Markus Lackner, Maximilan Ullmann, Alon Turgeman and now Dario Tadić are on his business card.

“Riegs kept us really well in the game again”, SKN St. Pölten coach Robert Ibertsberger praised his captain on “Sky” after his penalty parade in the 3-3 draw in Hartberg. With his foot, Riegler defused Dario Tadić’s unplaced penalty and made Bundesliga history.

Riegler has already saved nine penalties (or awarded shooters against him) and is the sole front runner ahead of Szabolcs Sáfár, who saved eight penalties (for Austria Salzburg, Austria Vienna and Wacker Innsbruck) in the course of his career.

Of the current Bundesliga goalkeepers, only Andreas Leitner is halfway up his neck with seven penalties held, but has a slightly worse success rate (25.9 percent) than St. Pöltner (28.1 percent).

Quota emperor is and will probably be Eddie Gustafsson for a long time to come. The former Salzburg resident defused five out of six 911s (83.3 percent). Only Roman Kienast was able to beat him once. Patrick Pentz is also a killer with three of seven penalties held (42.9 percent). (Those: transfermarkt.at)

Vollnhofer with “911 triple pack”

St. Pölten seems to be a good place for 911 killers. SKN legend Thomas Vollnhofer once won “in exile” in Wiener Neustadt in one season (2014/2015) in a penalty duel with Alexander Grünwald, Hannes Aigner and Steffen Hofmann.

In the meantime, “Volli” – in the immediate vicinity of the workplace of his specialist “Riegs” – is passing on his knowledge to the keeper youngsters of the St. Pölten Academy as a trainer.
