On Sunday, coach Stefan Kuntz has to name the final squad for the group phase of the U21 European Championship starting on March 24th. It is quite possible that BVB youngster Youssoufa Moukoko will appear on the list.
As the “kicker” reports, the only 16-year-old striker is definitely an option for Kuntz. Accordingly, the U21 coach discussed a possible nomination on the sidelines of the Champions League game between Borussia Dortmund and FC Sevilla (2: 2) on Tuesday.
Moukoko has played a total of six times at the DFB so far. He played four friendly matches for the U16s (three goals), and in September 2020 he played two games for the U20s. Now he could move up to the U21 players, some of whom are six years older than him.
Moukoko has made 13 appearances at BVB so far this season, in which he scored two goals. The storm jewel also rose to become the youngest scorer in Bundesliga history and the youngest player in the Champions League.
Löw also has BVB jewel Moukoko in mind
Even national coach Joachim Löw had spoken about Moukoko at the end of November last year. The youngster has “a talent that you don’t come across so often,” said the 61-year-old to the “kicker”.
DFB director Joti Chatzialexiou, on the other hand, reacted a little more cautiously. “We would do all well to accompany Youssoufa’s development with all relaxation and patience,” said the sporting director of the national teams at the DFB of the “Funke Mediengruppe”.
Nonetheless, Moukoko has plenty of potential. “With his talent, he can look forward to a great future,” commented Chatzialexiou. The BVB attacker, who was born in Cameroon, made a conscious decision to wear the DFB jersey – not because he was promised to play in the senior team.
