Coach Bruno Labbadia is threatened with losing his alleged “final” at Hertha BSC. The ambitious capital city club lost at home to Werder Bremen 1: 4 (1: 2) at the start of the second half and have to seriously fear relegation. The loan for Labbadia, which led the Berliners to stay in a difficult situation a year ago, could thus be used up.
In a hectic and fighting game, the ex-Hertha player Davie Selke scored the 1-0 (10th) for Werder with a converted penalty. Ten minutes later, Hertha was also awarded a dubious penalty, but the allegedly fouled Matheus Cunha forgave miserably. Defender Ömer Toprak headed a corner to make it 2-0 (29th) for the guests. Jhón Cordoba still managed the 1: 2 connection goal (45th + 2) for Hertha, but Leonardo Bittencourt made sure the situation was clear again with the 3-1 (57th). Josh Sargent (77th) increased in the closing stages.
Not only Labbadia is under great pressure. Before the kick-off, around 250 people at a demonstration registered with the police called for the resignation of manager Michael Preetz and his great advocate, President Werner Gegenbauer.
Labbadia took a risk in setting it up. The Hertha coach helped the only 17-year-old left-back Luca Netz to make his starting line-up debut, but he deleted attacker Dodi Lukebakio from the squad for sporting reasons. “Sometimes it’s about waking up and not being afraid to do things like that,” explained Labbadia.
Selke hits worth seeing from the point
Hertha got herself into trouble again. Maximilian Mittelstädt straddled completely unnecessarily in his own penalty area and hit Romano Schmid clearly on the foot – penalty. Selke converted with a remarkable shot into the corner and celebrated the goal against his former teammates exuberantly. However, the striker apparently had to be replaced after half an hour, injured on the thigh.
After Cunha’s missed penalty, which Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka didn’t even have much trouble with, the Berliners ran to the Bremen goal – but the guests also scored the second goal from a corner. The Berliners responded with furious attacks and were rewarded in stoppage time in the first half with the connection by Cordoba, who headed the ball into the mesh after a cross from Peter Pekarik.
Even after the break, the Berliners, driven by the tireless Cunha, put Bremen under great pressure. Werder rarely came to relief attacks and in the 51st minute had to cope with the failure of the defensive chief Toprak, who had been so safe until then. Bremen was not unsettled, the goal to 3-1 was also played out well worth seeing. On the other hand, Cunha missed a great chance to reconnect (66th).
