Bundesliga matchday 20 results and game reports

There were a few surprises in the Bundesliga on Matchday 20. Hertha BSC Berlin won against Borussia Mönchengladbach 4:1. Record champions Bayern Munich easily beat VfL Bochum and Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 at SV Werder Bremen. Union Berlin also won, surprisingly, 2-1 at RB Leipzig.

In the Bundesliga table, Bayern are still in first place with 43 points, Union Berlin is right behind them with 42. Borussia Dortmund has 40 points and is in third place. Last in the league are still Schalke, who once again drew.

Schalke against Wolfsburg 0:0 – The zero is – and Schalke 04 is still behind in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga: The bottom of the table continued its goal drought with a 0:0 against VfL Wolfsburg. The Royal Blues have not only gone 304 minutes without a goal, they have only scored three goals in nine games under coach Thomas Reis. With twelve points after 20 games – and the third zero number in a row – the gap to the competition threatens to increase further at the weekend.

Cologne against Frankfurt 3:0 – Eintracht Frankfurt suffered a severe setback in the Bundesliga in the race for places in the Champions League. Coach Oliver Glasner’s team lost 3-0 (0-0) after a poor performance at 1. FC Köln on Sunday, top scorer Randal Kolo Muani was unlucky this time. The Hessians missed the jump back to fourth place.

Hertha BSC against Gladbach 4: 1 – Hertha BSC has stopped the free fall in the Bundesliga after a dream goal by Marton Dardai and managed the much-needed liberation in the relegation battle. Coach Sandro Schwarz’s team beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-1 (1-1) and celebrated a win after four defeats in a row.

RB Leipzig against Union Berlin 1: 2 – The high-flyers from Union Berlin are still breathing down record champions Bayern Munich thanks to a furious comeback. In a wild top game on Saturday, the passionately fighting Berliners turned a 0-1 deficit against the in-form competitor RB Leipzig and later won 2-1 (0-1). With their fifth win in the fifth league game in 2023, the Unioners are second in the table with 42 points – just one point behind Bayern.

Mainz against Augsburg 3:1 – FSV Mainz 05 has gained a reassuring cushion on the relegation places with a success in its carnival home game. Coach Bo Svensson’s team won 3-1 (2-1) against their neighbors FC Augsburg and pulled away from the danger zone of the Bundesliga.

Bremen against Dortmund 0:2 – With the 300th away win in its Bundesliga history, runners-up Borussia Dortmund has kept its chances in the title race. Goals from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (67′), who had just come on as a substitute, and Julian Brandt (85′) gave coach Edin Terzic’s team a deserved 2-0 (0-0) win at newly promoted Werder Bremen. The North Germans already suffered their sixth home defeat, but maintained their position in the middle of the table.

Hoffenheim against Leverkusen 1:3 – The professionals at TSG Hoffenheim completely messed up the debut of their new coach Pellegrino Matarazzo. The Kraichgauers, who were threatened with relegation, lost 1:3 (0:1) against Bayer Leverkusen on the 20th match day of the Bundesliga and thus continued their month-long downward slide.

Bayern against Bochum 3:0 – Bayern Munich has successfully completed its dress rehearsal for the Champions League cracker at Paris Saint Germain. Julian Nagelsmann’s team won 3-0 (1-0) against relegation contenders VfL Bochum, but struggled for a long time. After the first home win of the year, the record champions remain at the top of the table – but an increase is needed in the round of 16 first leg in the premier class on Tuesday (9 p.m. / Prime Video).

Freiburg against Stuttgart 2:1 – The ice-cold Vincenzo Grifo shot SC Freiburg back into the top ranks in the Bundesliga. The Breisgauer won on Saturday without their coach Christian Streich, who was suspended, against VfB Stuttgart 2-1 (0-1), Grifo turned the heated Baden-Württemberg derby almost single-handedly with two converted penalty kicks.
