Bundesliga Matchday 1 Predictions: Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, and BVB Set to Dominate

The Bundesliga is back! And with it the (almost) infallible match day forecast from 90min.

The summer break was long – too long. At least the transfer market kept us on our toes a bit. But what really counts is on the pitch. (Three euros in the phrase pig.)

That’s why we’re all the happier that our dear Bundesliga is finally starting again and also offers a few exciting duels right at the start. You want to know how they turn out? Then treat yourself to our tips for the first matchday:

Kick-off: Friday, 8:30 p.m
Transmission: Sat1, DAZN

Both teams suffered a disappointment last weekend: Werder were knocked out in the DFB Cup, Bayern lost 3-0 to Leipzig in the Supercup. Who took the setback better?

In any case, the statistics clearly speak for the Munich team: the official season opening game, in which the champion plays at the start, has been around since 2002 – and the reigning champion has never lost! There were 16 wins and five draws.

In addition, FC Bayern won the last 14 (!) competitive games in the Weser Stadium. Never before has there been such a long winning streak in a foreign stadium in German professional football. Overall, the SVW has been waiting for a win against their southern rivals for 31 competitive games.

Does Harry Kane know about these statistics? Probably not. Shouldn’t matter to him either – we bet he’ll score his first Bundesliga goal anyway.

Tip: 3-0 for Bayern

A duel between two Champions League aspirants awaits us in the first conference of the new season. Both the Werkself and RBL have done well on the transfer market this summer, but have also lost well-known players in Diaby and Nkunku, Gvardiol and Szoboszlai.

Although the Red Bulls have often not been in good form since their promotion (only two wins in seven attempts), RBL are not a welcome guest at the BayArena: With six points from seven home games, Leverkusen recorded their weakest home record against Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

Tipp: 2:2

1. FC Heidenheim is starting the new season as a clear candidate for relegation – but you can be sure that Frank Schmidt’s squad will make it very difficult for some teams. Last season, the FCH was the team in the 2nd league with the most kilometers covered, the most sprints and the most intensive runs.

Such attributes should please Niko Kovac, after all his wolves were the team with the most sprints and the most intensive runs in the upper house. In short: Should be an intense game.

Fun fact: For the third season in a row, VfL can start with a home game against a newly promoted team. After a 1-0 win against Bochum, there was a 2-2 draw against Werder in 2022/23.

Tip: 2-0 for Wolfsburg

Sport-Club Freiburg v TSG Hoffenheim / Alex Grimm/GettyImages

Kick-off: Saturday, 3:30 p.m
Transmission: Sky

If a goal is scored from a set piece in this game, it’s probably for the SCF: Last season, the Breisgauer were the team with the most set pieces (21), while the TSG was the team with the fewest (nine, including seven penalties ).

Another thing that speaks for the sports club: They have not been defeated in five competitive games in Kraichgau, and TSG coach Pellegrino Matarazzo lost all of his six Bundesliga home games against Freiburg. And on top of that, the Breisgauers have won three of their four opening games in recent years (plus one draw).

Tip: 2: 1 for Freiburg

Kick-off: Saturday, 3:30 p.m
Transmission: Sky

Borussia Mönchengladbach is starting the season with a new coach for the third year in a row – under Gerardo Seoane, the Fohlenelf, who lost several regular players in the summer, finally want to bring consistency back into their performances.

It will also be an important task for the Swiss to get better results away from home: in 2022/23 Borussia only managed one (!) away win in the Bundesliga.

The chances of a threesome succeeding straight away in the Fuggerstadt are not that bad: In the last two years, FCA conceded a 0:4 home defeat at the start.

Tip: 2: 1 for Gladbach

VfL Bochum 1848 v VfB Stuttgart / Lars Baron/GettyImages

Kick-off: Saturday, 3:30 p.m
Transmission: Sky

Shortly before the start of the season, VfB has to cope with several blows in the neck: Captain and centerpiece Wataru Endo has moved to Liverpool FC, and defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is also about to make a change.

With VfL Bochum, the right opponent comes at the right time, because VfB have not been defeated against the Ruhrpott-Klub in their home stadium for 24 competitive games (17 wins, seven draws). In addition, Bochum only picked up a meager nine points from away places last season.

Tip: 2-0 for Stuttgart

Borussia Dortmund v 1. FC Köln / BSR Agency/GettyImages

Kick-off: Saturday, 6:30 p.m
Transmission: Sky

After just missing out on the championship, BVB is making the next attempt this season – with a new captain and Bensebaini, Sabitzer and Nmecha as newcomers. A home game on Saturday evening seems to be a good backdrop for Black and Yellow to set a first exclamation point.

FC are also the right opponents from BVB’s point of view, because Cologne have only won one of the last 23 games in Dortmund and have not scored 20 times in their Bundesliga history when playing for BVB – club low.

Tip: 3: 1 for BVB

1. FC Union Berlin v 1. FSV Mainz 05 / Maja Hitij/GettyImages

Kick-off: Sunday, 3:30 p.m
Transmission: DAZN

The greenkeepers at the Alte Försterei should not do anything after the final whistle, because the lawn should be properly tilled at Union vs Mainz: In the previous season, the two teams covered the most kilometers per game after 1. FC Köln.

What Union and Mainz also have in common: behind Freiburg, they were the two teams with the most goals from set pieces (17 each).

But it will benefit the Irons that they are allowed to play in their home stadium, because at the Alte Försterei they have been unbeaten for 23 games – longer than any other Bundesliga club. That’s what you call an impregnable fortress.

Tip: 2:1 for Union

Eintracht Frankfurt v SV Darmstadt 98 / Christian Kaspar-Bartke/GettyImages

Kick-off: Sunday, 5:30 p.m
Transmission: DAZN

At the end of the match day, a Hessen duel awaits us in Frankfurt. The two clubs have met eight times in the Bundesliga so far – there has never been a draw, nor has there been a dismissal.

What has also never happened: A Darmstadt victory on the first day of a Bundesliga season (three draws, one defeat). And a victory for SVD coach Torsten Lieberknecht over SBU (five games, five defeats).

Tip: 3-0 for Frankfurt
