All DAZN subscribers will probably be surprised today. Normally, the streaming service broadcasts the Friday evening game every week in addition to all Sunday games in the Bundesliga – however, there is no game from the German Beletage on the calendar for tonight.

The reason for this? The Europa League. Wait, what does the Europa League have to do with this? Quite simply: with Frankfurt, Leipzig and Leverkusen, only three German teams were in action in the round of 16 first legs on Wednesday and Thursday. They are then set for Sunday games anyway, so that they don’t have to play in the league again just two days after their European Cup game (At the time of the appointment, it was not yet clear that Frankfurt would play at Betis Sevilla on Wednesdays).

This case has happened more often and that’s why there is sometimes a third Sunday game.

There will even be four Sunday games this weekend. Because when the DFL set the game dates for the individual game days a few weeks ago, you had to reckon with the fact that alongside Frankfurt, Leverkusen and Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund would still be in action in the Europa League on Thursdays. And since there is no direct duel between those four teams for the 26th matchday, the meetings of all four teams were postponed to Sunday as a precaution.

The fact that BVB was eliminated in the playoffs against Glasgow Rangers and therefore did not have to play on Thursday was not subsequently used to change the date. And since there is now another game on Sunday, the game on Friday evening was briefly canceled.

Since two games, Dortmund vs. Bielefeld and Frankfurt vs. Bochum, kick off at the same time at 5:30 p.m., DAZN has for the first time ever a Bundesliga conference in its program, switching back and forth between Dortmund and Frankfurt. Before that, at 3.30 p.m., DAZN will show the derby between Leverkusen and Cologne, and at 7.30 p.m. the match day will be rounded off with a performance by RB Leipzig in Fürth.

The round of 16 second legs in the Europa League will be played next Thursday (March 17), so theoretically there shouldn’t be a Bundesliga game again next Friday.

However, this is not the case. Why? Very simple: The DFL also planned for Dortmund to make it into the Europa League round of 16, but with Leipzig and Frankfurt two German EL teams will meet directly next week. Therefore, only three instead of four games will be played on Sunday (plus Wolfsburg vs. Leverkusen and Cologne vs. Dortmund).
