Bundesliga, Leverkusen beaten after 35 games: Leipzig’s coup

Bundesliga surprise: After a streak of 35 consecutive games without defeat, reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen have fallen in the Bundesliga. The prestigious record was interrupted by Leipzig who defeated Xabi Alonso’s men, coming back from 2-0 to 2-3 away thanks to a decisive brace in the second half by Openda.

He hadn’t lost in the league for 463 days

Leverkusen had not lost in the league for a whopping 463 days, since May 27, 2023, when they were beaten 3-0 in Bochum. Since the start of last season, they had lost only one match in all competitions, the Europa League final against Atalanta. The Rossoneri had been hopeful after goals from Frimpong and Grimaldo, but after conceding a goal in the 7th minute of injury time from Kampl, they were surprised in the second half by the unleashed Openda, who scored in the 57th and 80th minutes.

Eintracht wins, Dortmund draws

In the other games on Saturday, Eintracht Frankfurt won by beating Hoffenheim 3-1 at home thanks to goals from Ekitike, Larsson and Marmoush. Kramaric’s strike was useless for the visitors. Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund drew 0-0, with the yellow-blacks also finishing with 10 men after Schlotterbeck was booked twice. Goals from Kleindienst and Honorat gave Moenchengladbach the win away to Bochum, while goals from Arnold and Bornauw allowed Wolfsburg to get the better of newly promoted Kiel away. Finally, Stuttgart and Mainz drew 3-3: the home team took a double lead with Millot and Leweling, before the visitors came back with Amiri (penalty) and Burkardt. In the 88th minute, Stuttgart took another lead with a goal from Rieder, but in the 94th minute, Leitsch scored the ball to finally equalise.
