Bundesliga, 5th matchday
FC Bayern – Bayer Leverkusen 1:1 (1:1)
0:1 Andrich (31.), 1:1 Pavlovic (39.)
The most important thing in brief: FC Bayern Munich did not reward themselves with a win in the Bundesliga summit against champions Bayer Leverkusen and suffered their first loss of points of the season. Despite a dominant performance and significantly more chances, the record champions couldn’t get beyond a 1-1 (1-1) draw against the double winners. The two best German teams did not offer a thrilling goal spectacle – the highly intense duel with Aleksandar Pavlovic as man of the evening was full of excitement.
At halftime of the Munich Oktoberfest, Vincent Kompany was unable to win for the first time as Bayern coach after winning six competitive games. There was another hangover after the depressing previous season, in which Leverkusen ended up 18 points ahead of FC Bayern, but not this time. It was bitter for Bayern that star striker Harry Kane had to be replaced in the final phase, visibly injured.
Young national player Pavlovic was the focus of attention in the top game. After his mistake caused Robert Andrich to make it 0-1 (31′), the 20-year-old equalized with a dream goal a little later (39′).
The voices about the game: Kompany is annoyed about the draw
Vincent Kompany (Trainer FC Bayern): “As a Bayern coach, you always want to win at home. The game went as we wanted it to. The important thing is that we keep going and trust that we will win so many games. In a game like this you usually don’t get that big of a chance. We had them and that’s why it’s a shame we didn’t win. (…) Unfortunately we don’t win. It was a top game, it looked like a top game.”
Xabi Alonso (Trainer Bayer Leverkusen): “You have to sacrifice a lot against Bayern. We had some problems. We played very seriously and are happy with the point. We needed this game at the Allianz Arena. FC Bayern are in very good form. We don’t normally play like that, But maybe it was better that way today. We had a few defensive problems today. Now we need a bit of balance with and against the ball. The whole team did very well . But I’m very proud of my players.
Neuer rules out DFB comeback
Manuel Neuer (FC Bayern): “We deserved more because we were the better team. We had the chances.”
… about Pavlovic’s pass out of bounds that led to the goal: “These are completely normal mistakes, but that doesn’t mean that he is responsible for the goal.”
… about the loss of Marc-André ter Stegen from the DFB team: “I left on my own initiative. It had nothing to do with Marc. I sent him a voice note after the surgery. He is doing well under the circumstances. It’s no secret that we have at least two excellent goalkeepers, Olli (Baumann) and Alex Nübel.”
Eberl comments on scene with Kane injury: “It doesn’t look good”
Max Eberl (FC Bayern sports director): “I think we made an exclamation point in the way we played football. You could see that we wanted to win the game. It’s a draw, but the way we played was very impressive. We said at the beginning of the season that we wanted to win every game. And he (Vincent Kompany) exemplifies that every day.”
… about Harry Kane’s injury: “I can’t say it yet. If Harry leaves the pitch, then it’s something because he’s tough. Doesn’t look good.”
Aleksandar Pavlovic (FC Bayern): “We had a lot of chances and didn’t reward ourselves in the end because perhaps we didn’t have the last chance to score. I think the opponents had two shots, one goal. When I made the pass to the corner, I actually wanted to play to Manu, but the ball bounced up stupidly. Then we conceded the corner and we have to defend that better. He shouldn’t be allowed to stand so freely on the sixteenth. Then I tried to motivate everyone and made my box. That was very emotional. (…) Things are going in a positive direction for us. We will work even harder on ourselves, keep going and go for the win.”
Granit Xhaka (Bayer Leverkusen): “Last week the defense wasn’t good enough. Accordingly, the goal today was to stay compact and allow little. We are happy to take this 1:1 with us. (…) Defensively it was a very, very confident performance today. Bayern have individually dangerous players up front. If someone had said before the game that we would take a point, we would have signed it.”
Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen): “It’s important that you get through the first 15 minutes and then the first ten again after halftime. (…) We knew that we wouldn’t go everywhere and that the teams would play apart. We know that we had a bit of luck a lot last season.”
… about his goal: “I hit it perfectly. It was a very nice and important goal.”
