Werder Bremen – RB Leipzig 1: 2 (0: 1)
RB Leipzig remain the team of the moment in the Bundesliga alongside FC Bayern Munich and, with a 2-1 (1-0) away win at newly promoted Werder Bremen, claimed second place in the Bundesliga behind the champions record for at least one year day. André Silva (13th) and Xaver Schlager (71st) scored the goals of the round of 16 of the Champions League around coach Marco Rose. On Sunday, however, RB may be pushed back from Bayern’s first chase by Eintracht Frankfurt (guests at Mainz 05) as well as SC Freiburg and Union Berlin (they meet in a direct duel). Despite this, the Rose series is impressive: his team have not lost a league game since mid-September. When the World Cup driver Niclas Füllkrug returned after back problems, Bremen were only able to equalize temporarily thanks to Christian Groß (56th) and remained secure in midfield in ninth place.

Start the winter break with three wins in a row: Bayer Leverkusen beat VfB Stuttgart 2-0 (1-0) and leave the English week with an impeccable record. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team benefited from a good individual performance by Moussa Diaby in the victory against the Swabians, who in the 30th minute scored an irresistible shot from the edge of the area. His shot was deflected by VfB defender Waldemar Anton and goalkeeper Florian Müller was unable to stop it. The “Werkself” then remained stable defensively and had little trouble countering the visitors’ unimaginative offensive efforts. Jonathan Tah clarified everything with his goal (82′). Then in the end there was the third three in a row, which equals eleventh in the standings. For Stuttgart, however, the 16th relegation place remains uncomfortable.
VfL Wolfsburg knock on Europe’s door ahead of the World Cup break. Lower Saxony held the upper hand at TSG Hoffenheim 2-1 (1-1) and during the winter in seventh place within easy reach of the European positions. Julian Baumgartlinger had given TSG, winless in four games, hope for an end to the drought just before the break (42nd), but an own goal by Hoffenheim defender Ozan Kabak in the middle of added time in the first time marked the turning point ( 45.+4). In the end it was Ridle Baku who scored for VfL to win (56′). Hoffenheim have not been rewarded for their dedicated attacking play and are stuck in tenth place in the middle of the table. With 23 points, Wolfsburg are two points behind BVB in seventh place.

Hertha BSC – 1. FC Cologne 2:0 (1:0)
After an excellent start to the season, the 1. FC Köln is slipping more and more into the relegation battle. After the last four consecutive Bundesliga games without a win (three defeats), coach Steffen Baumgart’s team had nothing to gain even in the capital club, Hertha BSC, which is also in crisis. Wilfried Kanga (9th) and Marco Richter (54th) scored for the Berliners, who recently suffered three failures in a row, in a 2-0 (1-0) home win. Cologne made the match for long stretches and had what was arguably the biggest chance of the game thanks to Sargis Adamyan (15th), among others, when the 29-year-old sabered an assist from nearly three meters with a botched fall on the crossbar. In the league, Cologne must appear as 13th in the table. with only three points clear of the relegation place. Hertha wintered through the trio as 15th in a non-relegation zone.
FC Augsburg – VfL Bochum 0:1 (0:0)
VfL Bochum achieved a very important victory in the Bundesliga relegation battle, deservedly winning the duel in the cellar on Saturday afternoon against FC Augsburg 1-0 (0-0). While coach Thomas Letsch’s team missed the final punch in the first half, VfL rewarded themselves with the golden goal after the break. After just under an hour, Christopher Antwi-Adjei was there after a long ball from Kosta Stafylidis and deflected the ball into the goal with the help of Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz (58′). FCA had a great chance to equalize just three minutes later, but striker Mergim Berisha thundered a penalty over the bar (61′). VfL extended the narrow lead with luck and skill over time and thus celebrated a second consecutive victory. Augsburg finished the 2022 Bundesliga season 14th. Thanks to the success, Bochum are just two points away, but remain penultimate in the table.
