TSG Hoffenheim coach Pellegrino Matarazzo is being linked with the job of US national coach. Now the coach is reacting to the rumors.
Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo of the crisis-ridden Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim has rejected a report that he “absolutely” wants to become US national coach. “These are false statements. I never said that I wanted to leave our club,” Matarazzo commented to kicker on a report by BildNewspaper: “Anyone who watches me during training and games will notice that I am fully present. I am the coach of TSG Hoffenheim with full presence.”

In fact, the Italian-American Matarazzo is a candidate for the US association. SIDAccording to information, the 46-year-old is on the shortlist – which is also said to include Patrick Viera and Gareth Southgate. Matarazzo, whose contract with TSG runs until June next year, informed Hoffenheim’s former sports director Alexander Rosen about the offer before his dismissal last Monday.
“Reports are a lie”
The USA is looking for a successor to Gregg Berhalter, who was fired after the early failure at the Copa America in his own country. The USA will host the 2026 World Cup together with Mexico and Canada.
Hoffenheim’s star striker Andrej Kramaric has since denied reports of alleged discord between Matarazzo and the team. “The reports in the media about alleged problems between the team and our coach are simply a lie,” Kramaric wrote on Instagram at the weekend: “It’s not just me who absolutely supports Rino, but the whole team.”

Recently, TSG was hit by a personnel shake-up. Rosen was released, as were the other managing directors. Pirmin Schwegler, head of professional football, is also leaving the club. In addition, squad planning is nowhere near complete just before the start of the Bundesliga, and national striker Maximilian Beier is apparently about to move to Borussia Dortmund. Matarazzo recently publicly called for reinforcements.
