Berlin (AP) – President Kay Bernstein of Bundesliga soccer club Hertha BSC doesn’t see the importance of soccer in danger despite ever-increasing monetization.
“Just as nature takes back its planet, people take back football because football belongs to the people. It will always remain that way,” the 42-year-old told the German news agency.
Bernstein cites the development in Italy as an example. «Football in Italy ten years ago was a bit dead, the stadiums were dilapidated, everything was broken, sometimes corrupt. all over again. It is a renaissance, an awakening. They’re even further ahead with their fan culture.”
Bernstein also wants to bring about change at Hertha BSC: “If we can demonstrably say here that we have restructured the club, we have created a cultural change by exemplifying things differently, showing that things are a little different than they are.” regulars on the market is required. So you can say: Come on, let’s work together on other solutions.”
However, the former Ultra still lacks the will of the people. This is similar to climate protection. “I think the Germans will only wake up when – to put it in the extreme – a city like Hamburg is flooded. Then people will understand: Oh, this is really happening,” said Bernstein. “It’s similar in football. First it has to implode so that people wake up and say: do we really need to change something. And then the question is: what time is it and how far can you go back?”
