Bundesliga – Grenzau clears Dusseldorf

Markus Ströher, manager, praised it as “impressive”. of the TTC Zugbrücke Grenzaubefore the match the performance of Borussia Dusseldorf in this season. “This team looks unbeatable at the moment. But that doesn’t make this home game any less interesting. Maybe we can annoy the class leader a bit.” And the Grenzauers succeeded: Düsseldorf, who arrived without Timo Boll and Anton Källberg, suffered their first defeat of the season at the Westerwald, but still remain top of the table, while Grenzau, on the other hand, pick up important points in the fight against relegation.

In the first single of the day, Maciej Kubik gave the national team Kay Stumper their first defeat of the season in four sets (11:5, 11:7, 12:14, 11:6). The Pole was unable to use five match points in the third set, but did not let himself go out of time in the fourth set. Dang Qiu acted like Stumper soon after: The European champion also lost his first singles match of the season against Samuel Walker. But Borussia still didn’t give up and after Sharath Kamal Achanta’s victories against Patrick Baum and Dang Qiu against Maciej Kubik, they fought their way into the decisive doubles. However, the reigning champion’s journey ended there, as Samuel Walker and Patrick Baum defeated Kay Stumper and Sharath Kamal Achanta in four sets (11:7, 11:5, 14:16, 11:7).

“Today was a good win for us,” said Grenzau’s Patrick Baum. “Even if it wasn’t really to be expected. But everyone fought very well and luckily in the end it was enough in the doubles”.

Dusseldorf’s Dang Qui saw a well-deserved winner in Grenzau: “Congratulations on this win. They played brilliantly and were super hot in every match. Of course, the defeat now hurts, but we built a good margin in the league. We want to finish the our good first part of the season on Wednesday with a good match against Bergneustadt”.

Breathe easy in Bergneustadt

Of the TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt ha with a 3:1 home win against SV Werder Bremen on matchday 10 of the table tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) it provided some air in the table cellar. The winner of the match against the North Germans was the national team player Benedikt Duda.

In the past season, TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt fought at times for the play-offs, but in the new season the view is more to the downside. The hosts managed just two victories before matchday ten. “Not ideal” is the current situation with five defeats in a row, according to Benedikt Duda. “But I know we all have the level to be able to win many games in a row again.”

And the 28-year-old followed up with an action against Werder Bremen. He carried his colors to victory with victories against Marcelo Aguirre and 2021 world doubles champion Mattias Falck. Roman Ruiz contributed the third point in a five set thriller (11:7, 11:6, 8:11, 9:11, 11:8) against Kirill Gerassimenko. Mattias Falck had provided the interim equalizer against Omar Assar.

“Today’s two points are worth a lot of gold,” said Benedikt Duda after the match. “The championship is incredibly even. You saw it again today. I am very happy that we won. Thanks to the fans. They have given us great support again.”

After the game, Bremen coach Cristian Tamas returned to focusing on the task ahead of him: “It was the hard-fought match we expected today. Now we want to go home quickly, get over the defeat and then attack again Tuesday against Grenzau”.
