1. FC Union Berlin remain the leader of the Bundesliga standings and have slightly differentiated themselves from the competition. The capital’s side won 1-0 (0-0) at VfB Stuttgart at the end of Matchday 9 on Sunday evening and now have two points clear of rivals SC Freiburg and four points each over Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Freiburg had taken the top spot for a few hours in prime time by winning 2-2 at Berlin’s Hertha BSC.
In front of 43,250 spectators, Paul Jaeckel (76th minute) scored the decisive goal in Stuttgart. The hosts are the only winless first division club of the season. They remain in the relegation zone 17. VfB striker Serhou Guirassy (83rd) also saw the yellow-red card.
Hertha and Freiburg split 2: 2
Nobody from Hertha BSC or SC Freiburg really knew what to do with the draw. Due to the 2: 2 (1: 1) on Sunday evening, the two teams’ streak in the Bundesliga lasted, but no one was really satisfied. With the point, the Freiburg side, unbeaten in seven games, had moved to the top of the table against the Berlin draw experts – at least for a few hours. Because that evening Union Berlin managed to return to first position at VfB Stuttgart. After all, SC’s lead over industry giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund is back to two points after their 2: 2.
Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (22nd minute) and Kevin Schade (78th) – favorites for a mistake by Hertha goalkeeper Oliver Christensen – had scored goals for the guests of Breisgau in front of 40,481 spectators at the Olympic Stadium, which after the Corona Head coach Christian Streich and his assistant Patrick Baier were followed by Lars Voßler as a second temporary coach. Dodi Lukebakio (34th / penalty) and Suat Serdar (61st) scored for Hertha, who equalized for the fourth time in a row and, after the hype over the separation from millionaire investor Lars Windhorst, remained just before the relegation zone with eight points.
