BVB loses CL places out of sight – Mainz celebrates again
Champions League without Borussia Dortmund? That could become a reality in the coming season. On the 20th matchday of the Bundesliga, the runner-up in Freiburg suffered the seventh defeat of the season. The last time BVB lost to their favorite opponent in the Bundesliga was ten and a half years ago. In the fight for the premier class, however, Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig showed no nakedness. The latter also clouded Schalke’s prospects of staying in the top German division, especially since Mainz brought in the next three against Union Berlin.
SC Freiburg – Borussia Dortmund 2: 1 (0: 0)

After a lively initial phase with chances on both sides, the guests got more and more of the game over time, but they didn’t manage to achieve anything. After the tea break, the sports club exploded. After a pass from Vincenzo Grifo, Woo-Yeong Jeong overcame BVB keeper Marwin Hitz with a shot from 20 meters. Shortly afterwards, Hitz himself didn’t give himself a chance. The Swiss driver steered a Jonathan Schmid hammer to the post, from there the ball jumped back to his hand – and from there into the goal. Meaningful for the goalkeeping problems in Dortmund, emblematic for the repeatedly uninspired hapless appearances of the black and yellow, who lose more and more of the Champions League places with the seventh defeat of the season.
Young star Youssoufa Moukoko managed to get connected a quarter of an hour before the end, but those who wake up too late will be punished by life or the Breisgau. For Freiburg it was the first win against Borussia in the 20th (!) Attempt. With 30 points, coach Christian Streich’s club is now only two points behind BVB.

After the cup embarrassment at Rot-Weiß Essen, Bayer was looking for reparations – and did well. Actually very good. As if out of their minds they ran the VfB over the pile, a double pack from Kerem Demirbay after half an hour witnessed the dominance of Leverkusen. Even the goal after the break did not put the Werkself off course. A quick counterattack against Moussa Diaby made Leon Bailey 3-1. The hit persisted even after VAR intervention.
Again a strong counterattack made a hook on the tenth win of the season. Again Diaby had his turbo legs in the game. Florian Wirtz did the rest with his head. It went on in rapid succession, but that didn’t change the home side’s show of force.
FC Schalke 04 – RB Leipzig 0:3 (0:1)

At Schalke the miner’s lamps are slowly but surely going out. Royal blues showed a lot of passion, but it is well known that you cannot buy much from them. For a long time, the home side’s defensive withstood the highly decorated offensive, but then hit the neck in stoppage time: Christopher Nkunku with a sharp corner on the fiver, S04 in deep sleep, Nordi Mukiele said thank you. Schalke fought, Schalke wanted, but especially in the game forward, Royal Blue lacked the means. And Leipzig? Made it better. Marcel Sabitzer with a low shot from 15 meters – 0: 2. The preliminary decision.
Mainz 05 – Union Berlin 1: 0 (1: 0)

A fight for every blade of grass. Opportunities? In short supply! But the first (and only) possibility was: Keven Schlotterbeck climbs to Karim Onisiwo’s foot in his own 16, referee Sascha Stegemann pointed to the point, Moussa Niakhate with a little luck and the help of the inner post to lead. Union wanted, but not much was to be achieved that day. A very, very valuable threesome for Mainz.
FC Augsburg – VfL Wolfsburg 0: 2 (0: 1)
Tore: 0:1 Weghorst (38.), 0:2 Baku (59.)
Wolfsburg remains the team of the hour that lives the dream of CL places. A mature, clarified performance of the guests in Augsburg. At all times, the guests were in control. A lightning-fast counterattack via Yannick Gerhardt landed at Wout Weghorst – 0: 1. And VfL stayed on the trigger. Weghorst rustled a cross from Paulo Otavio over the slipper, but Ridle Baku was there. The rest was a show.
