Munich – National soccer coach Hansi Flick gives his successor Julian Nagelsmann a successful start at Bayern Munich. The 34-year-old is 100 days in office for the German record champions this Friday.
In Munich, Nagelsmann took on the difficult legacy of the all-round winner Flick on July 1st. “I think Julian is a great trainer, a top trainer. Especially in his younger years that is very astonishing. He does an outstanding job,” said Flick of the German press agency.
Flick had won seven titles with Bayern in just a year and a half as head coach, including the triple in 2020. The 56-year-old is not surprised that Nagelsmann landed in Munich. “It was logical that he was coach of Bayern Munich,” said Flick to the football teacher and avowed Bayern fan, who was replaced by the record champions for a double-digit million sum at RB Leipzig in the summer.
Eight Bayern in the DFB squad
After a bumpy season preparation with Bayern, Nagelsmann is in first place in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League group despite the first competitive defeat before the current international break. “I’m really excited to see the team play football,” said Flick. As a national coach, the 56-year-old benefits from a successful FC Bayern. There are eight Munich players in the current DFB squad.
According to Flick, there are no fears of contact with Nagelsmann because of the special predecessor-successor situation. “I have zero point problems with Julian. We exchange ideas more often. That is just part of it. We have known each other for a long time. It is normal in football that a successor comes when you leave,” said Flick.
