Berlin (SID) – Federal Development Minister Gerd Müller calls on the Bundesliga to focus more on sustainability in the next few years and to promote climate protection. “The DFB and the Bundesliga should lead the way and give themselves a completely new image. In the next few years they should become climate-neutral and focus on sustainability,” said Müller to the SID: “That would be a strong signal in Germany and the world.”
There are already many efforts in the Bundesliga to work in a climate-neutral manner. VfL Wolfsburg, for example, has installed efficient water taps, saving 800 cubic meters of drinking water every year. There is also a vegan currywurst in the stadium. Record champion Bayern Munich recycles 90 percent of the waste and offers reusable drinking cups. In Frankfurt, a climate-neutral tram with green electricity brings the fans to the stadium.
However, the clubs’ efforts often appear ambivalent. In 2019, the climate protection consultancy CO2OL, together with Deutschlandfunk, calculated that around 120 tons of C02 would be produced by fans on a match day – that is usually what ten German citizens cause in a whole year. Above all, the arrival and departure as well as the consumption including the garbage that is generated harm the climate.
