Bundesliga: Could Borussia Dortmund’s crisis force their hand with Haaland?

Borussia Dortmund‘s defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday did little to calm rumours over the future of Erling Haaland.

The loss leaves Dortmund seven points off the Champions League places in the Bundesliga with just seven matches left this season.

If they do not qualify for Europe’s premier club competition next campaign, Dortmund could have to settle for losing their most prized asset.

In the week leading up to the Eintracht defeat, Dortmund had seen Mino Raiola and Haaland‘s father, Alf-Inge, hold talks with both Barcelona and Real Madrid over a transfer.

Evidently, being able to offer Champions League football themselves would be a big reason for the Norwegian striker to stay at Dortmund for another year.

However, if Edin Terzic‘s side miss out on qualification, they would not have that bargaining chip. They would also be missing the financial rewards on playing in the Champions League – a figure recuperable if they sell Haaland.

Dortmund have been reported to want 150 million euros for the 20-year-old this summer. That number will reduce considerably if they cannot offer their player Champions League football next season.

What’s more, Haaland will be free to join any club he likes the following summer if they trigger his reported 75 million euro release clause, which only comes into effect in mid-2022.
