During the week, Karl Lauterbach, the constant and omnipresent Corona warning, had praised the Bundesliga for its “cleanly implemented” hygiene concept and apologized for his repeated public skepticism.
The SPD health expert admitted that he was “completely wrong”. A few days later, Bayern Munich made another violation of a Bundesliga professional against the Corona requirements public. The French world champion Corentin Tolisso had a new tattoo – despite all the hygiene rules of the DFL.
Embolo also steps out of line
The next to step out of line – after Gladbach’s nocturnal excursionist Breel Embolo, Hertha’s tattoo fan Matheus Cunha and others. How does that fit together? Quite simply: just like in real (Corona) life.
The majority adheres to the restrictive rules in an exemplary manner, understanding that their own behavior is one of the decisive factors for the further course of the pandemic and its consequences (including on their own professional life). And one or the other thinks that rules only apply to others – or don’t think at all. In this respect, professional football is no different from other areas of society.
Rules apply despite the special status
The difference: At Tolisso, Embolo and Co., many take a particularly careful look because Bundesliga football has such an exposed position – with special rights in the pandemic, which hairdressers, landlords, artists and amateur athletes also want.
And with a role model function that requires this special position. Anyone who has the special privilege of being able to pursue their high-value profession in the entertainment industry without major restrictions – at least compared to ice hockey players who forego 60 percent of their salary or musicians who have not been allowed to perform for a year – must live with it, that each of his steps is carefully examined. Especially in times of corona.
Bundesliga hygiene concept works amazingly well
Yes, the Bundesliga with its hygiene concept has survived the pandemic surprisingly well so far. Without weekly game cancellations, as is the rule in the big US professional league. And the incidence value of Bundesliga professionals, if it were determined, would also be significantly lower than in Spain, Italy or England.
That is a success and certainly the most important reason why, even in the tightening lockdown debates at the turn of the year, there was never a serious call for a football stop as in spring 2020.
In order for that not to change, the league must quickly catch its corona outliers. Probably with even higher penalties if they otherwise do not understand the rules or do not want to understand.
