Bundesliga broadcasting rights: DAZN and Amazon show Hertha BSC against Union Berlin

The Berlin city derby between Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union on Friday evening (8.30 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL.de) will be broadcast by the streaming services DAZN and Amazon Prime Video. The agreement with the DFL allows fans to follow the game live, previously there were fears that the game could not be seen after the withdrawal of Eurosport mother Discovery.

The German Football League (DFL) announced that the remaining season games, which are not broadcast by the main rights holder Sky, will be shown on DAZN. DAZN has previously presented the Bundesliga with a sublicense from Eurosport and had to renegotiate with the league. All remaining ghost games will therefore be shown on pay TV channels Sky and DAZN.

The agreement with Amazon, however, initially only applies to the coming weekend, it includes the rights for the DAZN games. Accordingly, the Internet company also shows the encounter between FC Schalke 04 and FC Augsburg on Sunday (1.30 p.m.). This was announced by Amazon and the DFL.

Inconsistencies between Eurosport and DFL

DAZN had already shown Bundesliga games before the corona crisis, but because of inconsistencies between Eurosport and the DFL before the restart, the broadcasts were not secured recently. The American media group Discovery, to which Eurosport belongs, wants to terminate the contract with the DFL according to media reports.

Amazon had already acquired the broadcasting rights for the game between Bremen and Leverkusen, but had to contend with considerable technical difficulties when it premiered in the Bundesliga. The fact that the US company Amazon is investing in European football is nothing new. Last December it was announced that the Champions League will also be shown on Prime Video from the 2021/2022 season. The package includes the top games on Tuesday evening.

Sky does not show all Bundesliga games because a broadcaster cannot exclusively report on the Bundesliga. The DFL, Sky and the Bundeskartellamt had agreed on this in 2016. The cartel office had previously vetoed the league’s new marketing model. The ban on sole employment should create more competition.
