Successful start to the counterattack mission: FC Bayern Munich has started with an opening victory in the Bundesliga. In Vincent Kompany’s first league game as coach, Bayern beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 (1-0) away from home after a wild game despite being behind. Jamal Musiala (20th) put Munich in the lead in the first half after a beautiful attack down the right. After the break, Lovro Majer turned the game around with a double strike (47th/penalty, 55th) in favor of the suddenly unleashed Wolfsburg team. However, Bayern struck back with an own goal by Jakub Kaminski (65th) and a goal by Serge Gnabry (82nd) in front of 30,000 spectators in the sold-out Wolfsburg stadium.
Novice coach at FC Bayern
:Can Kompany create the Alonso effect?
There has been no complete overhaul at FC Bayern for the new season. Hopes of a return to the old dominance rest mainly on the new coach Vincent Kompany.

Bayern already has its eye on the title
The Munich officials had not exactly taken the pressure off their new coach before the start of the season. Bringing the trophy back to Munich was the “clear task” after FC Bayern’s first title-less season since 2011/12, sporting director Max Eberl made clear on DAZN. And Munich’s start to the match was a little bit masterful.
Although the build-up to the game was initially shaky against the vicious Wolves, it quickly became dangerous. Serge Gnabry had the first chance of the game after eight minutes, but was denied by the strong Wolfsburg keeper Kamil Grabara with a header from a tight angle, as were Harry Kane (11th minute) and Joshua Kimmich (13th minute).
Boey first with assist, then with foul
Shortly afterwards, however, the spell was broken when the busy right-back Sacha Boey prevailed at the byline and served Musiala perfectly, who slotted in from close range. Because Kompany’s man-oriented defensive tactics bore fruit and Gnabry missed on the other side shortly before half-time, FCB went into the dressing room with a narrow lead.
More than 16 years after his last Bundesliga game – back then as a player for Hamburger SV – Kompany was then dealt a cold shower. After Boey fouled Tiago Tomas in the box, Majer left Manuel Neuer no chance. The Bayern captain would not have had a chance with Majer’s next shot either, but the ball hit the left post from 16 meters (51′).

Wolves temporarily in the lead
But the outstanding Majer still wasn’t satisfied. After a bad mistake by the once again shaky central defender Min-Jae Kim, he was perfectly served by Patrick Wimmer and pushed the ball into the empty goal to give the Wolves the lead. In what was now a wild and highly attractive match, Musiala had the answer at his feet when his shot from the half-right hit the crossbar (57′).
In the 65th minute, Thomas Müller came on as a substitute and equalled the club record of legendary goalkeeper Sepp Maier with his 709th competitive appearance for the record champions. The equaliser followed immediately afterwards when Kane forced Kaminski’s own goal with his header following a corner. Gnabry then scored the winner from a half-right position.
