Bundesliga, 12th matchday – Saturday: VfB Stuttgart wins against Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt – VfB Stuttgart 1:2 (1:2)

VfB Stuttgart has stopped Eintracht Frankfurt’s winning streak and is still in third place in the table. Frankfurt had to admit defeat with a score of 1:2 (1:2). Deniz Undav scored twice for VfB (1st/45th + 1 minute). Stuttgart’s Waldemar Anton (26th) scored an own goal to equalize for the Hessians.

Eintracht Frankfurt had not lost eight competitive games in a row. With 18 points, Eintracht remains in seventh place. In the second half, Stuttgart earned the lead again as they were the more active team. Eintracht lacked creativity and impact.

Serhou Guirassy could have increased the score for the guests in the final phase, but he missed his 16th goal of the season by a few centimeters.

Borussia Dortmund – Borussia Mönchengladbach 4:2 (3:2)

Borussia Dortmund is 4:2 (3:2) against Borussia Mönchengladbach temporarily in fourth place in the table. Even an early 0-2 deficit thanks to goals from Rocco Reitz (13′) and Manu Koné (28′) didn’t upset BVB.

Marcel Sabitzer (30th), Niclas Füllkrug (32nd), Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (45th) and Donyell Malen (90th + 7) scored for Dortmund. The upward trend for Mönchengladbach has therefore ended. After four competitive games without defeat, Gladbach went into Dortmund empty – as in the last ten games against BVB.

The early deficit initially caused problems for BVB. However, after Koné’s goal, Dortmund reacted and were able to make up the deficit within three minutes.

SC Freiburg – SV Darmstadt 98 1:1 (1:1)

The winless streaks of SC Freiburg and SV Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga continue on matchday 12. With the score 1-1 (1-1), Freiburg missed out on a win for the fourth time in a row – returnee Torsten Lieberknecht’s team is waiting a game longer for a sense of success.

The guests took the lead through Mathias Honsak after 18 minutes. Lucas Höler (35th) secured at least one point for Europa League participants Freiburg. Despite their clear superiority, the SC failed to take advantage of opportunities. Even after the break, the action mostly took place in Hesse’s half. Coach Christian Streich called for more breadth in his team’s offensive game. However, the SC found it difficult to implement this.

1. FC Union Berlin – FC Augsburg 1:1 (0:1)

1. FC Union Berlin has ended its series of defeats in the Bundesliga under the interim coaching duo Marco Grote and Marie-Louise Eta – but they are still missing their first win since August. In the first game after the end of coach Urs Fischer’s era, the Berliners drew 1-1 (0-1) from FC Augsburg.

Ermedin Demirović had given the guests the lead (39’/foul penalty). Robin Knoche missed a penalty for Berlin (58th). Kevin Volland secured the draw late with his first goal for Union (88th minute).

The Berliners left bottom of the table by winning their first point after nine league defeats in a row, but have now not achieved a win in 15 games.

VfL Wolfsburg – RB Leipzig 2:1 (1:0)

RB Leipzig lost to VfL Wolfsburg for the second time in four weeks. Wolfsburg won 2-1 (1-0) and thus pushed Leipzig out of the Champions League places. VfL took the lead early: Jonas Wind scored 1-0 in the 9th minute. But just 14 minutes after Yussuf Poulsen’s equalizer (52′), Rogério (66′) made it 2-1 for Wolfsburg.

For Wolfsburg, this ended a negative series of five Bundesliga games without a win. The team showed a very committed and sometimes passionate performance against Leipzig. The players threw themselves into every shot on goal and fought duels with great physical effort. Nevertheless, RB Leipzig was superior in terms of speed, technique and game system for large parts – but was hardly able to take advantage of any chances.

Werder Bremen – Bayer 04 Leverkusen 0:3 (0:2)

Werder Bremen lost 0:3 (0:2) against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. This means Leverkusen could retake the lead from Bayern Munich after just one day. An own goal from Bremen’s Olivier Deman (9th minute) after a cross from Jonas Hofmann and a goal from Jeremie Frimpong (43rd) steered Bayer Leverkusen to their eleventh win in their twelfth league game of the season before the break. In the second half, Alejandro Grimaldo (76th) scored the final point.

However, after three games without defeat, Bremen suffered a not unexpected setback with a total of five points. The guests let Bremen come in the first few minutes, but then took more and more control with their class. Despite a good performance, Werder was never able to stop the high-flyers from Leverkusen.

The Friday game between 1. FC Cologne and Bayern Munich had previously ended 0-1 (0-1).
