BUND Cologne criticizes the draft of the regional plan

(DD | Symbolbild) How areas in and around Cologne may be used and built on in the future is set out in the so-called regional plan. The regional council launched a revised version on Friday. It should be binding until 2043.

Important components of the new version include housing construction and flood protection. Criticism comes from BUND Cologne. He has asked the regional council not to adopt the current version of the Cologne district government’s draft plan.

According to a BUND press release, the approved regional plan fails to achieve its goal of ensuring a high quality of life for the population. Settlement planning would primarily affect large areas in landscape protection areas and areas with climate-ecological importance. According to BUND Cologne, it is also possible to create new affordable living space without taking up additional space. The Advisory Council for Environmental Issues has already called for land consumption in Germany to be reduced to net zero by 2030.
