The latest Corona virus variant or mutation in England and South Africa (South Africa) has recently made a scene. One of the reasons is that this new variant is said to be more contagious and has been found in Indonesia, namely D614G.

1. Known by many names
The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States calls this virus variant SARS-CoV-2 VOC 202012/01, which means variant of concern found in 2020 month 12. The number 01 on the back shows the type of variant 01.
This variant was previously called VUI 202012/01, which stands for variant under investigation. There are also those who call it N501Y, which means there is a mutation in the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein at position 501, with the amino acid asparagine (N) being replaced by tyrosine (Y).
2. Different variants
Still according to the CDC, the South African Government on Friday (18/12), announced the outbreak of a new strain of Corona virus with the same scenario as what happened in the UK. The variant found in South Africa also has the N501Y mutation, but it spread independently and is not related to the variant in the UK.
3. Called 70 percent more contagious
This new variant was identified in the UK for the first time in September 2020. In November 2020, a quarter of cases in this country were dominated by the new variant. The figure jumped to 2/3 cases by mid-December 2020. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this variant has the potential to be 70 percent more contagious.
