1. Known by many names
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States call this virus variant SARS-CoV-2 VOC 202012/01, which means that the anxiety variant seen in 2020 is 12. The 01 on the back indicates the type of variation.
This variant was previously called VUI 202012/01, which refers to the variant being investigated. There are also those who call it N501Y, meaning that at stage 501 there is a mutation in the receptor binding field (RBD) protein spike, the amino acid asparagine (N) is replaced by tyrosine (Y).
2. Different types
According to the CDC, the South African government announced on Friday (18/12) that a new type of corona virus has erupted in a similar situation to that of Britain. The variant found in South Africa also contained the N501Y mutation, but it spread independently and was unrelated to the British variant.
3. 70 percent more called infection
This new variant was first identified in the UK in September 2020. As of November 2020, a quarter of cases in this country are dominated by the new variant. By mid-December 2020 this number had increased to 2/3 cases. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the variant was 70 percent more likely to be contagious.
