Bumper Mushroom Season in Norwegian Forests: Abundance Brings Increased Risk

The mushroom pickers are looking forward to a bumper season. But more mushrooms in the forest also come with a downside.

This year is an extraordinary season for mushrooms in Norwegian forests, especially in Eastern Norway, according to the Norwegian Mushroom and Useful Plant Association (NSNF). At the same time, the Poison Information Center is experiencing an increase in inquiries from people who have been exposed to poisonous mushrooms. – In Eastern Norway, it’s fantastically good! It hasn’t been this good for many years, says Pål Karlsen, head of the Norwegian Mushroom and Useful Plants Association (NSNF).

Even the experts are surprised by the large amount of mushrooms in Norwegian forests this year. According to Karlsen, it is the mushroom pickers in Eastern Norway who walk away with the victory.

– Norway is a long and difficult country to say anything about in general, but in Eastern Norway it is very, very good. It has been quite dry in northern Norway, but it looks like something is coming there too. Western Norway is on par, while Southern Norway and Trøndelag are good.

– But it is still quite early in the season, so this bodes well. It’s really just getting out!

Record at the soup control

At NSNF’s digital fungus control, 3,500 submitted mushrooms came in last weekend. It is a new record.

In the digital mushroom check, people can submit photos of the mushroom they are unsure about, and get an answer as to whether it is safe to eat. Several of NSNF’s local associations also carry out fungus control in several places in the country throughout the autumn.

– People who send in are usually people who are quite sure of what they have picked, but who want it confirmed before they eat them.

– Can cause great damage

More mushrooms in the forests also mean more poisonous mushroom.

Up to and including July this year, Poison Information received 463 inquiries about cases where people have or may have been exposed to poisonous mushrooms, writes Address newspaper.

This is an increase of 44 per cent, compared to the average for the last five years.

Brekke says that a number of poisonous mushrooms also appear in the mushroom control.

– It goes hand in hand with the amount of mushrooms. There are few cases of poisoning in bad mushroom years, it comes and goes directly with the season, says Brekke.

How to distinguish between the mushrooms:

Disc mushrooms: These have disks/slats on the underside of the hat. Disc mushrooms are a large group of mushrooms, including the most poisonous mushrooms in Norway. Pipe mushrooms: These have tubes on the underside of the hat that can look like a sponge. The group includes many edible mushrooms, but mushrooms are heat-treated for 10–20 minutes before eating. Piggsopper: Porcupines have spikes/spikes on the underside of the cap. The bright porcini mushrooms are good edible mushrooms and the group contains no poisonous mushrooms.Poresopper: Pores are smooth under the hat. The pore layer is fixed in the hat flesh, and the individual pores can be separated from each other. He has clear advice for people who pick: Don’t take chances.

– You must know what you have picked. Go for a mushroom check or use the digital mushroom check. If you ask ordinary people, you know they know their stuff.

In Bodø, Salten Naturlag has discovered record amounts of white fly fungus, writes Nordland newspaper. White fly agaric (Amanita virosa) is a deadly poisonous mushroom, which in severe poisoning can cause liver damage and, in the worst case, death.

– It probably comes to other parts of the country as well, but not in such large quantities as in Bodø, says Brekke.

There are three poisonous mushrooms in particular mushroom experts warn against:

– If you find one of these in the basket among other mushrooms, our advice is to throw everything away. Just a small bite can cause great damage, says Brekke.

Brekke believes this year’s mushroom season will be long:

– Ten years ago it started in July and built up to September as a highlight. Now the mushrooms come early, and we pick them for much longer, he says.

– I think the season will continue until the frost comes, but with other species. Boletus and chanterelles disappear, but other edible mushrooms will appear. The chanterelle, the large edible mushroom, can be picked right up until the frost and snow arrive. Then you can just brush off the snow and have them fully frozen.
