BUMN Minister Erick Thohir revealed plans to merge PT Bank Muamalat Tbk and BTN Syariah. If according to plan, the merger of the two banks will occur in March next year.
Erick explained that his party was encouraging healthier competition in the Islamic banking industry.
“We also encourage that competition in the sharia banking industry can be healthier, BSI is already healthy and good, but it must be healthier. We agree that Indonesia has an open market, which means there is foreign investment, some from the private sector, some from BUMN as a stronghold of the national economy “But protection for MSMEs must occur,” explained Erick at the Ministry of BUMN Jakarta, Tuesday (19/12/2023).
He said that his party had discussed with the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH) and the Minister of Religion regarding the possibility of Bank Muamalat and BTN Syariah synergizing and making it an alternative to large sharia banks.
“If you combine it later, it might be able to enter the top 16, who knows, enter the top 10. Because why is sharia finance something that is actually interesting at the moment,” he said.
Erick said the merger process was currently in progress. If all goes well, the two banks will merge in March.
“So the answer is currently in the process of being discussed, if everything goes smoothly in March it could be final,” he said.
