Bulletproof Vest Protects Ukrainian Orphans during Evacuation: A Story of Survival

“A rocket landed in our garden. The explosion broke the windows,” says Ukrainian orphan Denis, who was evacuated from his native village to Kyiv together with his siblings Jana and Hanna. During the evacuation, they used specially made bulletproof vests, which are supposed to protect children between the ages of 4 and 14.

The children whose parents died as a result of the disease lived in the village of Nyyu-York in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. As their home was located near the front line, they faced shelling several times a day. “The attacks on Kyiv are nothing compared to what we experienced at home. As soon as you went outside, you were shelled. We couldn’t go outside at all,” Jana describes.

In Kiev, the children moved to their cousin Alina, who was evacuated from the same area and has now applied for guardianship of the orphans. “I took care of them since they were born. We lived on the same street. Their mother was my aunt. We are one family. They know me,” explains Alina.

A Ukrainian woman from New York plans to move back to her native village with her children after the end of the war. “We are looking forward to it being over so we can go home. We would go back there if it was safe. We hope victory is near and there will be peace again,” says Alina.

Due to the Russian invasion, in addition to Alina, millions of other people had to leave their homes. According to the UN, there are now more than six million people living in Ukraine who have had to move from their native villages and towns to other, safer parts of their country.
