By 2090, Bulgaria’s population will decrease to 4,915,423, or below 5 million. This is shown by data from the first scenario of the National Statistical Institute (NSI), which is defined as realistic and is in accordance with the normative requirements of the European Union for the demographic and socio-economic development of the member countries, BTA reported.

Demographic forecasts (perspective population projections) are formal calculations that are carried out under the condition that certain assumptions about the future development of birth rates, death rates and migration are accepted, according to NSI. They give an idea of the possible future development of the population during the forecast period.

The forecast was developed until the year 2090, using data on the number of the population, the number of live births and deaths, the number of settlers and emigrants. The population is distributed by sex and age for each year of the period. Three different scenarios are used for the population projections depending on the expected socio-economic development of the country.

The other two scenarios were developed under the hypotheses that the demographic development will take place during favorable and, respectively, unfavorable socio-economic processes in the country. In the first case, the population of Bulgaria by 2090 will be 5,100,943 people, and in the second case – 4,790,139 people.
