Bulgarians prefer to buy gasoline cars, in the EU they choose electric ones

Sales of new cars in Bulgaria are growing three times higher than the average rate for the European Union.

In October, new car sales in the EU grew by just 1.1%, while in Bulgaria this percentage was 3%, according to data from the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers.

This year, 75.9 percent of registered cars in Bulgaria are gasoline, followed by 15% diesel. Hybrids and electric cars are lagging behind in new registrations. This is a move back to what is happening in the EU, where more than 50% of new registrations are permanent cars.

In October 2024 new car registrations in the EU reversed the downward trend and registered a slight increase of 1.1%. Spain led the way with a strong increase of 7.2 percent, while Germany rebounded by 6 percent after three months of decline. A decline was recorded in France (-11.1%) and Italy (-9.1%).

Battery car registrations increased by 2.4% in October 2024. However, the full-year market volume is still 4.9% lower than the same period last year, and the overall market share is 14.4%. Plug-in hybrid car registrations fell 7.2% last month.

New hybrid-electric cars increased by 17.5%, with their market share rising to 33.3% from 28.6% last October.

Gasoline car sales fell 6.8%. Gasoline cars now account for 30.8% of the market, down from 33.4% in the same month last year. The diesel car market decreased by 7.6%, resulting in a market share of 10.9% last October.
