About half of the inhabitants of Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia do not consider the Russian Federation guilty of the attack on Ukraine. They talk about it results sociological survey conducted by the analytical center GLOBSEC.

Who is to blame for the war on the territory of Ukraine?

According to the center, 48% of Hungarians confirm that Russia is to blame for the war, 19% of respondents are sure that Western countries “provoked the Russian Federation”, another 18% of the country’s residents believe that Ukraine “infringed upon the Russian-speaking population.”

In Bulgaria, exactly half of the respondents call Russia guilty of unleashing the war in Ukraine, 26% say that the West is to blame, according to another 12%, Ukraine is responsible for the war.

In Slovakia, 51% of respondents call Russia guilty of the war, 28% say that the responsibility lies with Western countries, 16% blame Ukraine.

Latvia is next after Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia on the list of the countries least accusing Russia of attacking Ukraine. Here, the proportion of respondents who believe that the Kremlin is to blame for the war is 61%. 14% of residents are sure that the West is to blame, another 9% blame Ukraine.

Most of all, the Poles (87% of respondents), Czechs (78%) and Lithuanians (74%) are the ones who are most confident that the blame for unleashing the war lies with Russia.

The least number of those who consider Ukraine responsible for the war are Poland (2%), the Czech Republic (5%), Lithuania (5%) and Romania (6%).

Participation of NATO troops in the war on the territory of Ukraine

In general, residents of Central and Eastern European countries do not support the participation of NATO troops in hostilities against the Russian Federation in Ukraine. This answer was given by 63% of respondents. Most of all, the Hungarians are against the introduction of NATO troops in Ukraine, this opinion is shared by 86% of respondents.

In Bulgaria, 75% of respondents are against it, in Slovakia – 71%.

The GLOBSEC study shows that Bulgaria and Hungary remain the most “pro-Russian” among the Central and Eastern European states that are members of the European Union and NATO.

The GLOBSEC study was conducted in March 2022 as a computerized telephone survey of 1,000 citizens in each country.
