Bulgarians are pulling their hair out after this news about vegetables

The markets in our country are full of imported vegetables, at the same time the Bulgarian ones are exported. This is shown by data from the Ministry of Agriculture, it is written “Labor.”

From January to May, 156.5 thousand tons of fresh vegetables and 144.6 thousand tons of fresh fruits were imported in Bulgaria, which is an increase of 9.9% and 5% respectively compared to the same period in 2020.

It is mainly about deliveries of tomatoes, which are imported to Bulgaria from Turkey and Greece. For the five months the import of tomatoes increased by 8.8 thousand tons or by 21%, of cucumbers and gherkins – by 4.6 thousand tons or by almost 30 percent, peppers – by 2.8 thousand tons or 25% and pumpkins – by 1.3 thousand tons or 25.7%.

We also import more onions, garlic, eggplants, mushrooms, cabbage and even lettuce, with quantities increasing from 1.8% to 36.3% for various vegetables.

On the other hand, the deliveries of potatoes decreased by 21.6%, carrots and turnips by 14.3% or 1.3 thousand tons less, respectively.

In the fruits we import mainly citrus and bananas, which are not grown in our country. But in our country more and more apples are sold, foreign production.

Their deliveries account for almost 15% of imports and reach 21.1 thousand tons.

Imports of nuts, melons, grapes, strawberries and peaches increased in the range of 15.2% to 63% compared to the same period in 2020, and that of apricots and cherries – decreased by 15.5% and 38.6%, respectively. %.

At the same time, Bulgarian vegetables are exported, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture. For the first five months of 2021, the export of fresh vegetables increased by 70.6% on an annual basis, to 30.8 thousand tons. The largest increase was in the export of tomatoes – by 4 thousand tons (71.1%), cucumbers and gherkins – by 3.1 thousand tons (59.5%), peppers – by 1.6 thousand tons 62.5%) and sweet corn – by 1.1 thousand tons (over four times).

The quantities of potatoes, cabbage, eggplants and pumpkins are also increasing – by between 2.1% and 60%. Exports of mushrooms, legumes (mainly peas), lettuce and leeks have also increased many times over, although in general they remain relatively small.

Cucumbers rise in price by 65%

Cucumbers are sold at almost 65% more expensive now than their price in early August last year, according to an analysis by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry.

Last year at that time they were sold at BGN 1.16 per kilogram, compared to BGN 1.91 now. Green peppers are sold 17 percent more expensive – from BGN 1.17 per kg last August, to BGN 1.37 per kg now.

At the same time, tomatoes (Bulgarian and imported) and apples fell in price by between 9.4% and 14.9%.

The average wholesale prices of fresh potatoes, cabbage, Bulgarian greenhouse and imported tomatoes and greenhouse cucumbers on the markets increase in the range from 1.4% to 15.8% on a weekly basis. A more significant weekly decrease was observed for green pepper – by 14.4%, and insignificant for peaches – by 0.6%.
