Bulgarian Teen Deborah Mihailova Overcomes Trauma and Finds Support Amidst National Protest

Deborah Mihailova is a guest in “On focus with Lora Krumova”. The girl was brutally raped by her then boyfriend, Georgi Georgiev. Her body was cut with a mock knife and her hair was shaved. The girl is in her last year at school, she has a prom coming up. In the NOVA studio, Deborah shared that her classmates were close to her, despite the many looks that pierced her. “They greeted me with a smile. We counted to 12. They say they won’t go to prom without me,” says the twelfth-grader.

Second national protest in support of Deborah

She does not hide that she is afraid to go out, but she does it because she does not want her life to end. It started intensively after the beginning of the school year. Until then, she says, she didn’t even go to the store. The reason – a mixture of fear and discomfort from the looks of passers-by. “I get pictures that are shocking.” This is how Deborah Mihailova comments on the numerous reports she receives from other women who have become victims of violence. He says he musters up the strength to answer some.

Deborah also shared that the support of the whole of Bulgaria after she was mistreated by her ex-boyfriend was unexpected for her, but it gave her strength. “Before that I felt nothing. I stood and looked at one point,” the student recalls. “I recognized my attacker. I have not known him for a short time and there is no way to mistake the man – voice, gait. We had arranged to meet and I was waiting for him at home. We had a relationship until the last moment,” she added. According to her, they had been in a relationship for 3-4 months, but they had known each other for a year.

The new examination on Deborah found two medium bodily injuries

“He rang, he said ‘It’s me’ and accordingly I opened the front door. I had left it open. Our relationship was quite ordinary. I saw a masked man – all in black with a mask and gloves,” Deborah recalls. You were doing your hair in her room. “He smiled at me and waved at me. It was his smile”, says the young girl categorically. Her next memories are of her neighbor waiting for an ambulance. It is not yet known how long she was unconscious. She could only hear the sound of the clipper but felt no pain. “I saw what happened to me when I was waiting for the ambulance – hanging flesh. I was in shock,” adds Deborah Mihailova. She says that to this day she still feels dizzy, nauseous and has a headache. Since then, she has lost 10-12 kg because she has been eating only through a straw for over a month.

The scars are on the thighs, chest, back and a few on the face. He also has an affected nerve in his finger, for which physiotherapy is pending. “Immense cruelty. It doesn’t look like a human being to do it to another human being,” said the victim’s lawyer, Slav Daskalov, categorically. According to him, this is not a manifestation of rage, but the result of a methodical approach bordering on sadism.

The Prosecutor’s Office: Georgiev is the perpetrator of Deborah’s injuries

Deborah says the question she kept asking the doctors as they treated her wounds was whether she was going to die. “They told me they were doing everything possible to keep me alive,” says the girl.

The first signs of violence began at the beginning with “quite normal remarks”, claims the victim. Georgi made remarks about her clothing – not to wear leggings and blouses with larger necklines, and she complied so that there would be no scandals. He slapped her every day. “I thought everything would pass,” admits Deborah. 2-3 weeks before the brutal attack, he grabbed her by the throat, and she blacked out. Her friend then let her go and said, “Don’t worry, you’re not going to die. I know what I’m doing.”

The girl knew that Georgi Georgiev was once married, but at the time of their relationship he was already divorced. “If I had known that he was married, I would not have dealt with him”, the victim is categorical. She got the impression that they weren’t going out together, but she didn’t pay him enough attention. Georgiev did not look for Deborah or her parents after the violence she experienced.

Deborah’s lawyer: Gaps in the investigation allow Georgiev to cover his tracks

To date, she has been hurt the most by malicious comments on the Internet about her. Some of them say that she is a light and paid girl. The biggest fear is whether she will be able to have her own children because of the drugs she is taking. Deborah urged girls who experience similar suffering to her to share with their parents and not stay silent.
