Bulgarian Red Cross Warns of High Avalanche Danger in Mountain Areas Today

The avalanche danger in the mountains is high today, warned the Mountain Rescue Service (MSS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC), BTA reported. A lot of snow has accumulated on the leeward slopes and the danger of avalanches is significant in the high parts of the mountains, the PSS said.

The weather today in the high places is foggy and cloudy and it is not advisable for tourists to trek there, mountain rescuers said, adding that when it is foggy, there is a risk of getting lost.

There is fog in the high parts of Vitosha, Stara Planina and Rila, in Pirin and the Rhodopes the cloudiness is broken. A moderate wind blows in Stara Planina. Temperatures in the mountains today are between minus 10 and minus 5 degrees and there is a danger of frostbite, mountain rescuers warned.

A team from the PSS – Bansko traveled to the “Belmeken” hut in Rila after receiving a report of a dead tourist, the PSS also said. There is still no information on what led to the fatal end.
