Bulgarian Prime Minister studies expulsion of Russian diplomats after spy scandal

MADRID, 20 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Boiko Borisov, has warned that he could be forced to expel Russian diplomats because of the case of alleged espionage that occurred yesterday on Bulgarian soil.

“Once again we must declare unpleasant people to Russian diplomats because of yesterday’s operation (Friday),” Borisov explained. “Russia and we are good partners in various spheres, but this espionage activity must stop,” he said.

“Bulgaria”, he added, “will always and consistently defend its security and its belonging to the Euro-Atlantic world.”

The president has also expressed his astonishment at the attitude of the country’s president, Rumen Radev, who so far has not left any comment on the matter.

On Friday, the Bulgarian General Prosecutor’s Office reported the arrest of several military and officials suspected of handing over confidential information to Russia. The Bulgarian authorities charged six people with espionage, five of whom are in custody and one was released on bail for collaboration.

In turn, the Russian Embassy in Sofia denounced the “incessant attempts to break the Russian-Bulgarian dialogue and demonize Russia again”, in a statement collected by the official Russian news agency, RIA Novosti.
