Bulgarian Orthodox Church and National Revenue Agency Clash Over Corporate Tax Audit

The National Revenue Agency and the Holy Synod are in a sharp clash because of an audit of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It has been running since last year for the church’s corporate tax obligations for the period from 2017 to 2022, reports Bulgaria ON AIR.

The Holy Synod, however, does not agree with the state auditing his accounts and wrote a letter to the revenue agency in which the audit is defined as “unconstitutional and a risk to national security”. The letter was signed by the bishop of Melnik and secretary of the Synod, Gerasim.

One of the main objections of the Synod is that income from rents should be considered an economic activity. Because these were not revenues, but only donations. The only thing the metropolitans admit is that the state can check “funds from the state subsidy for the remuneration of priests”.
