Bulgarian Deputy Minister Irena Dimitrova Presents Candidate for Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights – Meglena Kuneva

Deputy Minister Irena Dimitrova presented the Bulgarian candidate for Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights – Meglena Kuneva, to representatives of diplomatic missions in Sofia from member states of the Council of Europe. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on its website.

For the first time, Bulgaria is putting forward its own candidate for a top position in the Council of Europe, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also indicated.

BTA recalls that on January 11, the Council of Europe announced that three candidates will compete for the position of Secretary General of the organization. The candidates to succeed the Croatian Maria Pejčinović-Buric are the current Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, the former President of Switzerland Alain Berse and the Estonian Indrek Saar – Social Democrat, Minister of Culture from 2015 to 2019.

Irena Dimitrova emphasized the priority attention Bulgaria pays to human rights issues in international relations. He highlighted the role of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights in maintaining the high standards of this international organization and ensuring its effective operation. The deputy minister also highlighted the undeniable personal qualities and extremely rich professional experience of the Bulgarian candidate, emphasizing the government’s confidence that Meglena Kuneva can contribute significantly to the defense of human rights in Europe, the announcement states.

Meglena Kuneva presented her views on the work of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights and answered questions from the diplomats of the member states of the organization accredited in Sofia.
