Bulgarian Citizen Denied Treatment in North Macedonia: Calls for Intervention

A Bulgarian with dual citizenship left the Republic of North Macedonia to receive treatment in Bulgaria. He claims that in our western neighbor he was repeatedly denied treatment because of his origin.

The man called on the authorities in our country to intervene, as, according to him, the situation is escalating and Bulgarians are being deprived of more and more rights.

Goran Serafimov has been in Sofia for several days. He leaves Skopje because of his deteriorating health.

“I was under a lot of pressure. I have a leg problem, I have a hernia problem, I have been denied the right to health care, as well as all basic human rights. Because we Bulgarians are not recognized in Macedonia. I have submitted complaints to the Commission on Discrimination, but because we do not exist as part of the people, all the complaints we submit are rejected”, Goran Serafimov said.

Goran claims that because of denied health and social assistance, one of his closest friends, also of Bulgarian origin, died 7 months ago.

RSM did not allow MEP Andrey Kovachev and four other Bulgarians to enter the country

“He was diabetic. The man literally died of cold and hunger. This is unfortunate and I am asking the Bulgarian state to wake up. I ask the institutions to react. We have no one to protect us except the Bulgarian state”, said Goran Serafimov.

Goran claims that it is increasingly difficult for our compatriots to find a living there.

“An obvious Bulgarian cannot even be a porter. If he starts working in a private company, an inspection will come and the owner of the company will be told: “either fire him because he is Bulgarian, or we will come up with some kind of fine”. “I had several businesses of my own. They failed me”, said Goran Serafimov.

The number of Bulgarians leaving North Macedonia has increased sharply in recent months, our compatriot claims.

“I hope it is a temporary escape, but I want to warn that we can expect an emigrant, God forbid, refugee wave. We are also talking about Bulgarians like me, who have dual citizenship, but also about stateless Bulgarians. I have information about about 1,000 families who are thinking in this direction,” Serafimov said.

He himself currently sees his future in Sofia. “My family is dead, I’m alone. I’m thinking of starting over. Maybe one day I will come back again”, explained Goran Serafimov.
