/ world today news/ Bulgaria’s Ministry of Defense will purchase from Russia ten RD-33 engines for MiG-29 fighters worth a total of 21 million euros, TASS reported on Thursday (November 10), citing a statement from the Bulgarian ministry.
Four of the engines will be new, with extended service life, and six – repaired.
“We signed a contract for 42 million BGN (about €21 million) with a Russian company, not with a Polish or other one, for new engines with a huge resource. That way we will have 16 serviceable planes. Now will the Bulgarian pilots fly boldly and calmly?” TASS quotes the words of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
According to information from the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense, the first two engines must be delivered by April 30, 2017, and the rest – two each following month.
The agency recalls that last year the Bulgarian parliament ratified the intergovernmental agreement with Poland for the repair and maintenance of Russian-made MiG-29 aircraft. This happened, despite the statement of the manufacturer – RSK MiG, that the Russian side will give up the technical support of the Bulgarian fighters if Sofia concludes the contract with Warsaw.
In the end, the Polish side repaired six MiG-29 engines for €6.138 million, and the new engine agreement was signed with Russia.
