Bulgaria wants the EC to introduce a tariff barrier to the import of eggs from Ukraine – 2024-08-20 16:44:09

Within 4 months, the Commission must make an assessment of the state of the market of the Union or of Bulgaria

Bulgaria asks the European Commission to activate a protective mechanism for Bulgarian producers of eggs because of the observed negative market trends as a result of imports from Ukraine. The procedure for preparing a written request to the Commission has already started. This was announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Dr. Georgi Tahov, at a meeting with representatives of the Industrial Poultry Association, organized today at the Ministry of Agriculture.

Minister Takhov recalled that Bulgaria took the first step in the protection of producers, as data on the situation in the sector were presented by him to the Council of Ministers in Brussels. As a result of the joint efforts of several Member States, a protection mechanism was introduced with the activation of tariff quotabeyond which a customs duty applies on the import of eggs from Ukraine, based on Regulation (EU) 2024/1827.

“We are convinced that it is necessary to protect Bulgarian producers through this mechanism,” said Minister Takhov.

According to Regulation (EU) 2024/1392, temporary protective measures against adverse market effects can be introduced for a certain period to counter negative trends. In order to impose such measures, it is necessary for the Commission, within a period of up to four months, to assess the state of the Union market or the market of one or more Member States of the relevant products.
