Bulgaria: Tuition fees in public universities are abolished – 2024-03-16 04:16:18

Tuition fees for undergraduate and doctoral students at Bulgaria’s state universities will be abolished this year if changes to the higher education law approved by the government today are adopted by parliament. The aim is to improve students’ access to higher education and make state universities more attractive to prospective students who are reluctant to continue their studies in Bulgaria, the press service of the cabinet announced.

Abolishing tuition fees could cost the state about BGN 136 million.

It is anticipated that the annual tuition fees paid by undergraduate and graduate students will be half of the amount already approved for the year 2023-2024. For this reason the cabinet decided to allocate additional funds to universities and scientific organizations within one month of the entry into force of the amendments, in order to limit the damage suffered by educational institutions from the lower tuition fees.

The measure is a continuation of the state’s policy to ensure affordable and quality education.
