This year, Bulgaria won 40 medals for red, white, rosé and sparkling wine, as well as the highest distinction Revelation (wine-discovery) at the “World of Wine” in Brussels. Every year, Bulgaria has over a 42% success rate in the competition, and this year the country reached a record 46%, which ranks us well above the average success rate. This was commented by Meglena Mihova, founder of Probehex, in the program “In development” with host Veronika Denisova.
This competition was born in Brussels 30 years ago, and over the years it has started to travel around different countries, its appearance is quite prestigious, since it is the only competition in the world that does sample control of what is sold in the chain. In this way, a higher quality is also ensured. Bulgaria had the honor of being the host country of the “World of Wine” in 2016.
This year, producers from almost all production regions of Bulgaria took part in the competition. The award wine-discovery, which this year was won by a Bulgarian wine, is an award that is determined by the number of points received. The jury consisted of 300 people from all over the world, who were divided into smaller commissions, added Mihova.
The awarded Bulgarian wines in the competition are in the price range from BGN 5 to BGN 50, but with the largest share are those between BGN 5 and BGN 10. Although we have built a rather romantic notion of quality wine, on the Belgian market, for example, the best-selling wines are below 6-7 euros. It is important that Bulgaria has excellent wines in this price range so that they can be exported and sold.
There are many quality wines, but what is particularly important in the selection of wines for export is a good partnership and a long-term vision of the efforts that are necessary for marketing Bulgarian wines on the international market.
“For us, the business partnership is the number one criterion, because good wines are made everywhere, but the partnership and the vision of the long-term investments that must be made by the producer and the importer are extremely important.”
Interest in natural, unfiltered wines is quite high at the moment. White wines, which have a cleaner aroma, as well as organic wines, which are no longer just a fad, are also a large part of the market. Bulgaria is still uncompetitive in terms of prices.
“World of Wine” also has a branch for beer. On the Bulgarian market, this is a drink that is among the leading in terms of consumption and has potential for export, Mihova pointed out.
