Bulgaria on the verge of an influenza epidemic (OVERVIEW) – Healthcare – Health – NOVA News

Bulgaria on the verge of an influenza epidemic. In many areas in our country the cases have jumped by 50% in the last few days. This is shown by the data of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases. And doctors report the worst in children and people over 65.

Only cases of influenza A have been proven in our country – the strain that is rampant is “Cambodia”. The main symptoms are a rapid rise in temperature to 38-39 degrees, sore throat, dry cough, fatigue, muscle aches. Medical institutions are seeing an increase in hospitalized children up to 14 years of age with viral pneumonia.

Prof. Hristova: Influenza vaccines also cover the “Cambodia” variant

Such is the situation in Dupnitsa, where almost all places in the children’s wards are occupied. The forecast of the Chief State Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev is that a long flu wave will not be reached, as we are already at the end of March and the weather is warming.

Mostly children enter Dr. Goranova’s office with flu-like complaints.

“They come with a runny nose, cough, fever, muscle and joint pain. If he does not lower the temperature by the third day and does not start clearing the symptoms, then the bacterial infection has already accumulated and he should be treated with antibiotics “, explained Dr. Elka Goranova.

Pneumonia in children develops in a few days, doctors say. And the number of hospital admissions is increasing. Among the youngest patients with pneumonia is a 40-day-old baby. He was hospitalized in one of the two hospitals in Dupnitsa.

“The capacity of the beds in one is full, in the other there are more places. Higher morbidity is in children up to 10-12 years. Mothers can tell you at the moment: “it started at one o’clock, when you are”, ie the sharp start is typical “, explained Raina Saparevska, RHI-Dupnitsa.

And yet – so far the strain “Cambodia” passes with the typical flu picture and there is no reason to worry, said the chief state health inspector.

“There are also cases of severe damage to individuals who are probably new to this strain of the virus, have no immunity, so they have a higher risk of developing pneumonia, but are generally susceptible. of treatment “, said Angel Kunchev.

In just 14 days, flu cases have jumped by a third, according to the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases.

“In Blagoevgrad, however, we have a 10-fold increase in cases for the last 2 weeks – from 58 to 580 per 100,000. For the whole country, if you look at last week compared to the previous week, we have an increase of about 30%. 50% are Burgas, Varna, Dobrich, Pazardzhik, Pleven, Ruse, as well as Shumen “, said Prof. Iva Hristova, director of NCIPD.

Health authorities expect that the flu wave will not be intense.

“It’s too late for the flu. Whether it will be able to develop is a full-fledged epidemic, or it will simply pass with a higher incidence in some places, remains to be seen, “said Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev.

There is an increase of 1% in those infected with COVID-19, the data show. However, according to experts, there is no risk of a new peak of the wave.
