To this day, the circumstances under which the tragedy occurred in the ski resort of Bulgaria with a Greek dead from an avalanche are still being investigated.
Exclusively on LIVE NEWS, one of the four men from the group of Greek skiers who managed to survive speaks.
It describes what preceded the dramatic seconds before they were at the center of the avalanche.
“We didn’t go to take pictures like a fool, we weren’t the only ones at that altitude. From the beginning of the day, people were climbing to that altitude. There was no clear prohibition.”
He categorically denies what the ski resort officials and the Bulgarian rescuers have claimed.
The prevailing scenario from their side was that the group of 4 Greeks defied the danger and went to a point, off the track, without the necessary equipment in order to take pictures.
The friend of the 36-year-old victim complains for the first time that there were no safety measures, and no notice from the ski center about the dangerous slope of Borovic.
“The news from Bulgaria to Greece is not valid. It’s not 100% what they’ve said right. There were not all the safety measures from them. There was no avalanche warning at that point.”
Reports and media in the neighboring country are reporting that the group of youths ignored the warnings and started down the snowy slope outside the track area. The wife of one of the three survivors says that where the deadly avalanche occurred was part of a ski slope that was open to the public.
The trip that ended in tragedy
The group of 4 young people started their journey to Bulgaria on Saturday night. All of them properly equipped to have fun at the ski resort of Borowitz, as they used to.
For over ten years, they did mountaineering and winter sports. None of them expected that their excursion would end in tragedy.
The wife of the man who came out alive and saw before his eyes his friend disappear in the snow, conveys his first words after the tragedy. He escaped the avalanche by a few meters.
“This must have started, he says, from above because it didn’t even bother him, he didn’t understand. He was just lucky because he was a little further to the right and didn’t catch him at all. The other two children, Antonis was half buried and came out alone immediately and until he turned around and Giorgos hit his hand a little and they lost Kostas”.
The unfortunate 36-year-old did not have time to react. The avalanche swept him away in a split second.
“Kostas was further back, they told me he had stopped and was in the middle. The kid was a certified mountain guide, he had been to so many mountains.”
The company of the unfortunate 36-year-old is testifying to the Bulgarian authorities, with the investigations continuing.
