/ world today news/ Bulgaria lost BGN 66 million in European funding because of the Shipka tunnel. This is clear from the written response of the relevant Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev to an MP from the opposition.
The bypass of the city of Gabrovo, whose former mayor is Donchev, costs almost BGN 93 million. The money was provided by European funds from the 2007-2013 program period, which finally ended on December 31, 2015. Due to legal appeals of the Environmental Impact Assessment middle of the Shipka bypass, at the end of last year only BGN 26.8 million were paid. “The completion of the site will be financed with funds from the state budget”, writes Tomislav Donchev.
It is clear from the answer of the Deputy Prime Minister for the management of European funds that the so-called There will hardly be a “tunnel under Shipka” in the next ten years. The project, which envisages the construction of 3.5 km. tunnel under Stara Planina, will cost about half a billion BGN. Similar funds are not provided for in the new program period of the European funds 2014-2020. Funds for the tunnel connecting Northern and Southern Bulgaria will be difficult to find from the state budget. A priority for the authorities in the coming years is to provide budget financing for the construction of high-speed sections on the Sofia-Varna route.
The construction of the tunnel itself is at the level of an extended concept project, it is clear from the reply of the Deputy Prime Minister. In the period 2013-2014, when he was an opposition deputy from GERB, Tomislav Donchev repeatedly participated in political initiatives in support of the construction of a tunnel under Shipka.
