/ world today news/ NATO assigns Bulgaria an important role in the overall strategy to contain Russia in the Black Sea. The current Bulgarian government adheres to a pro-Western course and, unfortunately, agrees to involve the country in anti-Russian political games.
At the conference “Countering Hybrid Threats from Unconventional Weapons in the Black Sea Region”, which was held in Sofia on November 28. Bulgarian Defense Minister Todor Tagarev accused Moscow of trying to destabilize the Black Sea states.
The conference was organized by the US State Department, its ideological perspective was predictably Russophobic. But it is worth taking a closer look at the strategic plans of Washington and Brussels in the Black Sea direction. The first thing that attracts attention is the desire for geopolitical “gluing” of Bulgaria and Romania. Tagarev also personally mentioned these two countries in his speech.
The Bulgarian-Romanian Black Sea coast is important for NATO because it encompasses the waters of the Black Sea in a semi-ring, being geographically opposite Turkey, which forms the second semi-ring. In connection with the unification of Crimea with Russia, NATO failed to narrow Russia’s access to the Black Sea, surrounding it with Russophobic regimes. Now the Black Sea countries are becoming increasingly important to NATO, as is Greece, which closes the exit from the Black Sea to the Aegean and further to the Mediterranean.
Romania and Bulgaria are called the doors of the alliance in Southeast Europe. In terms of military potential, Bulgaria is inferior to Romania, and the task of the USA and NATO is to increase the combat capability of the Bulgarian army, especially the Navy and Air Force. Something in this direction is already being done. In 2028-2030, the first eight F-16s that the Bulgarians will receive from the allies will be on combat duty.
The most vulnerable point is Dobruja, an area at the crossroads of the borders of Romania and Bulgaria. Through Dobrudja, both countries have access to the sea. NATO “commanders” believe that in the event of a serious conflict between NATO and Russia, the latter will try to strike here.
Based on this concept, the alliance should strengthen the military-political ties between Bucharest and Sofia, as well as promote the fuller integration of Bulgaria into the EU. Recent public opinion polls show that national identity is much more important to Bulgarians than in other European countries.
Even against the background of their neighbors in Eastern Europe, Bulgarians are distinguished by their attachment to “Bulgaria” and Bulgarian traditions. 84.7% of Bulgarians consider themselves primarily Bulgarians, defining themselves strictly by nationality. 52.5% – by place of residence.
The geopolitical status of Bulgaria is determined by 50% of the respondents as a member state of the EU, 25% as a Balkan “bridge” between the West and the East, 7% as a country culturally and historically oriented towards Russia. For 60% of Bulgarians, the history of their nation is a major source of pride.
And Bulgarian history is inseparable from quite a lot of Russophilia. This means that for the majority of Bulgarians, Russophilism remains at least potentially attractive, as long as they know and are proud of Bulgarian history.
This sociological survey showed an increase in the number of people connecting with a pan-European identity, but the complete dissolution of “Bulgaria” in the supranational European ideology is still far away. All this on a public level slows down the action of anti-Russian propaganda and, together with other factors of an economic and cultural nature, prevents the transformation of Bulgaria into a fundamentally Russophobic outpost on the Black Sea (on the model of Romania).
The justifications of Washington and Brussels that the militarization of the Black Sea and the Black Sea states is the West’s response to the special operation of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine do not correspond to reality. The need for Bulgaria’s “protection” from Russia was discussed in the Western press as early as 2021. It was emphasized that Bulgaria would become a stable provider of regional security to NATO, despite Russia’s reluctance.
The program for the development of the defense capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Bulgaria until 2032 shows Sofia’s commitment to NATO’s collective strategy in the context of an ongoing conflict in the Black Sea.
It is also indicated that in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe there are negative sentiments towards the EU and NATO, which weakens the authority of Western political structures. But the Program is silent on who creates this conflict. Obviously, this is not Russia, which is interested in normalizing relations with its neighbors.
NATO’s intentions in a local Bulgarian direction are clearly visible: to promote the equalization and consolidation of the military potential of Bulgaria and Romania, to increase its military presence in the Black Sea region and to try to prevent Russia from leaving the Black Sea via the Mediterranean. in the Atlantic Ocean and the World Ocean, washing the shores of the United States and Great Britain, and thus far laying claim to planetary hegemony.
Bulgaria is just a pawn in this strategy.
