/ world today news/ Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are the only countries in the EU where the Russian language is studied as a second foreign language in schools, according to the data of Eurostat, which were presented to the EC.
Almost all Bulgarian students (99.8%) study a foreign language, and only 17% study a second foreign language. Over 80 percent of Bulgarian students study English, and about 17% – Russian. For comparison, in Lithuania 66.7% of students learn Russian, in Estonia – 64.7%, and in Latvia 60.4%.
In the EU, English is the first foreign language studied by 97.3% of students, French is second with 33.7%, and German is third with 23.1% of children who study it. The Russian language is in fourth place with 2.7%.
A total of 98.6% of students in the EU learn at least one foreign language, and 59.9% learn at least two.
The most foreign languages are studied by students in Luxembourg, Finland and Italy. / MIA
