/ world today news/ Asked by Petar Volgin about Moscow’s demands to withdraw NATO forces from Bulgaria, Stanishev said:
“It is normal for any sovereign state to react decisively to such requests, we cannot be given ultimatums. Bulgaria itself determines its national interest and how to guarantee its national security.
Another issue is the overall relationship between Russia and NATO, this is a complex topic. This is the first time we have seen the Russian side so clearly and emphatically state its concerns. Talks are underway. The concerns and security of each country must be guaranteed seriously enough.”
The PES president commented that Bulgaria can be a voice of reason and dialogue. “I believe that even the most difficult conversations are better than any confrontation and escalation. I am against cold war escalation type talk without hearing the other side. That’s dangerous when it comes to nuclear superpowers.”
