A ministry spokesman said the Russian embassy in Sofia had been informed of the two diplomats declaring them undesirable.
–
Earlier, prosecutors said that since 2016, both diplomats had been trying to obtain classified information from Bulgarian citizens about the army’s modernization plans and the maintenance of military equipment.
–
According to the newspaper Vedomosti, the deportations worked at the commercial council. The Russian embassy in Sofia said that the Bulgarian side had not provided any evidence to substantiate the allegations.
–
“The unjustified expulsion of Russian diplomats does not correspond to the traditionally constructive nature of bilateral relations,” the embassy emphasized. “Bulgaria used to be the most obedient Moscow satellite in Eastern Europe in Soviet times,” Reuters reported.
–
Interfax recalled that an analogous incident took place in January this year, when the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office also suspected two Russian diplomats of espionage. Both Bulgaria resigned.
–
Moscow reacts reciprocally in similar cases, so the expulsion of two Bulgarian diplomats from Russia can be expected.
