(CNN Spanish) – “Dictador de El Savador”, that phrase is the new biography of the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, on his profile on his Twitter account.
The change in biography and his photograph occurred on Sunday night in what many have interpreted as irony due to the opposition’s allegations that a dictatorship is being installed in the Central American country.
According to the opposition, the accusations towards Bukele are due to the fact that he has concentrated all power since his New Ideas party achieved an absolute majority in the Legislative Assembly in the elections of last February.
In addition, the criticisms are also due to the decree that retires judges, magistrates and prosecutors over 60 years of age, the ruling of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice that leaves open the possibility for the re-election of Bukele and more recently the implementation of bitcoin in the country.
During the massive march on September 15, against recent government decisions, many of the participants carried posters denouncing what they consider to be a dictatorship. That same day, in his speech for the 200 years of national independence, Bukele rejected those accusations. “There is no dictatorship here. Here is a democracy that has expressed itself freely at the polls and not once but twice, “said the president.
Bukele, very active in social networks and used to making his decisions known to the population through these platforms, has governed El Salvador since June 2019, after winning the presidency in the first round and with a large majority.
